| Ref:16735 FRODSHAM, Charles 'AD Fmsz' 84 Strand, London, No 7778. An interesting movement with unusual lever escapement by this famous London firm, circa 1855. 18-size half-plate reverse fusee movement jewelled to the 4th wheel, the frame stamped C.F - probably signifying a caliper unique to Frodsham. Early English club-tooth, single-roller lever escapement. Compensation balance with spiral balance-spring. Enamel dial also signed Arnold, with original gold hands. 44.5 mm diameter.
Dana J Blackwell collection. Charles Frodsham (1810-1871), the most famous of the Frodsham family of clock and watch makers, began to sign some of his best watches with AD Fmsz. This code stands for the date 1850 signifying, it is thought, his new caliper of reverse fusee watch designed in 1850. Frodsham, in partnership with John Roger Arnold in the 1830's, continued to use the Arnold name for his best watches for many years after the death of John Roger in 1843. See also Frodsham No 7172 which is shown in 'The Camerer-Cuss Book of Antique Watches,' page 230-1. Dial with hair cracks at 6 and lacking case bolt and joint, otherwise a rare example of this makers work. Not cleaned by me. Chain off but present, not working. £225.00 | |
