Heavy gold case hallmarked 1825/6, casemaker WM, the dome engraved "Presented to Capt H L Champlin as a token of esteem and regard BY HIS FRIEND J M FRENCH, 1st May 1827." Capped fullplate fusee movement with engraved cock and barrel-bar. Earnshaw 'dovetail' spring detent escapement. Early compensation balance with timing screws and rare gold spiral balance-spring. Engine-turned silver dial, original gold 'moon' hands. 56 mm diameter.
Dana J Blackwell Collection. [Santiago] James Moore French, famous London chronometer maker with connections to the Spanish market, admitted to the Clockmakers Company in 1810. Henry L Champlin (1786-1859), of the then important shipping town of Essex on the Connecticut coast, one of the most successful ship captains operating between America and England during the first half of the 19th century.
