Ref:26376 HASWELL, R & Sons, London. No 2923. 2-day box chronometer, 27th in the 1894 Greenwich Trials. 3-piece 'fancy' brass strung mahogany box. Fullplate reverse fusee frame supplied by Mercer and very well finished by/for Haswell, bearing the English Government 'Broad Arrow' mark. Earnshaw-type spring-detent escapement. The bimetal balance is interesting and the paired metals are not the usual ordinary brass and steel, but appear to be non-magnetic. White metal (Palladium?) balance-spring. Silvered dial with state of wind indication, blued-steel hands. 19 x 19 x 19 cms.
Dana J Blackwell Collection. A fine and interesting chronometer with Royal Observatory Greenwich supplied photocopy of its admiralty records, from 1895 until 1964 when it was sold to Malcolm Gardner, from whom it was purchased by Dana. The detent is original but has a slight buckle. Otherwise box, bowl, gimbals and movement in fine original condition. Movement not cleaned by me but this can be arranged if wanted. NB: This chronometer is in the United States and will need specialist shipping and handling. Please enquire as to likely costs.
