| Ref:26502 HALL, Leonard. Louth/BONNIKSEN. No 1774. Good, large free-sprung karrusel Deck Watch in original box.
Silver openface case hallmarked 1901-2, casemaker JW (Joseph Walton, Clerkenwell), the back engraved HS^2. Three-quarter plate keyless movement jewelled to the centre, the pillar plate bearing the Bonniksen Patent stamp. Single-roller lever escapement, balance-spring with overcoil. Perfect signed enamel dial also marked with the Broad Arrow. 58 mm diameter. Together with the original mahogany deck box with signed ivory plaque.
At some time after the First World War the Admiralty converted their three-piece boxes into two-piece boxes. The locks were removed and replaced with a catch and the wooden tray for holding the watch was replaced it with a brass drum with glazed screw bezel. They also made the watches 'unwearable' by removing the bow, the crystal and its retaining snap in the bezel. Sometime later, the admiralty classified all their chronometers and deck watches using a 'HS' prefix, standing for Hyrographic Stores. Items marked HS^1 were box and pocket chronometers, HS^2 were the best quality Deck Watches with lever escapement, HS^3 were lesser watches, etc. This watch is a fine and rare example of an Admiralty karrusel with documented naval history, and the movement is in particularly fine and original condition. £3,250.00 | |
