| Ref:32647 PARKINSON & FRODSHAM, London. No 737. Very rare example of this unusual caliper of pocket chronometer with elaborate compensation-curbs. Gilt-metal consular case, casemaker RG (probably Richard Grove, Clerkenwell), circa 1820. Fullplate fusee movement with maker's typical chevron engraved cock table. Earnshaw style detent with pinned in passing-spring. Flat steel balance and spiral balance-spring with twin compensation-curbs mounted below the balance. Perfect signed enamel dial and original gold hands. 55 mm diameter. Together with gilt-metal watch chain and unengraved agate mounted seal.
One of only six examples of this caliper (for civil use, as per Earnshaw sugar-tongs) I have recorded, most of which are either movements or recased, - see the letter with photo of No 934 by L E Christmas in Antiquarian Horology, March 1968, page 374. The gilding of the case is mostly gone and the detent shows signs of a slight buckle, otherwise in good original condition. Cleaned. £3,500.00 | |
