Good all-English made wristwatch in lovely original condition.
2-piece 9ct gold 'slimline' case hallmarked Edinburgh 1964, sponsor's mark SCW (Smiths Clock and Watch Division). Smiths Cal:60461E 15 jewel shockproof movement, a development of the original 12.15 movement as designed by Robert Lenoir and his team (not Jaeger) at their new works in Cheltenham around 1946. Club-tooth lever escapement with steel escape. Monometallic balance, Beryllium balance-spring. Stylish 60's silvered dial with upright raised gilt Arabic numerals, original gilt hands. 33.5 mm diameter.
I do not have a Smiths catalogue that shows this exact model but Smiths use of sans-serif caps for the name on the dial is most indicative of period - I was a design student at the time. For more information about Smiths English wristwatches see the short note in my website Glossary, and my illustrated article on Smiths ‘English Wristwatches’ in the April 2003 issue of Antique Collecting.
In fine original condition, case, dial and movement, the still crisp presentation engraving to 'H Cassel...from the Southern Gas Board' showing that the watch has had little use. On lightly used black leather strap. Serviced for its previous owner and working well.
NB: Having reached a certain age I am looking to sell off my remaining stock of wristwatches, and I will be placing sale prices on them all - I doubt you will find cheaper equivalents anywhere else. In order to keep prices of what are mostly very good examples as keen as possible, I shall be offering many of them in their unserviced condition, but please realise that this means these watches will have been photographed in their unclean state. Careful cleaning and a proper service is of course recommended before they are worn, but many are likely to have been serviced relatively recently anyway, just not by me.
