Brass body retaining the top rail (often missing) with nicely shaped steel handle, the ratchet and spring mounted on a circular plate. 14 cmm overall length.

The early Lancashire pattern as shown in the trade card by Thompson (circa 1745), and in the subsequent  catalogues issued by Wyke & Green, Stubbs, etc - see Crom, Horological Shop Tools.

Steel pawl for holding the outer end of the spring during winding partly broken, otherwise complete.
