Daniel Buckney 'Chronometer, Watch & Clock Manufacturer; Maker to the Admiralty, Italian Government, &c, &c.' A greatly respected watchmaker, apprenticed to J F Cole, and member of the British Horological Institute of which he was the vice-president at the time this watch was manufactured. He died in 1927. Buckney received a Patent for a non-magnetic balance in 1888 and entered many fine watches in the Greenwich and Italian Deck Watch Trials. His obituary in the Horological Journal states, among many other accolades, that he "stood for the highest quality of workmanship throughout his career"

This watch came 15th in the Greenwich Trials of 1893-94 after which it was purchased by the admiralty where it saw service from 1894 until it was sold off in 1922. It was used on the hospital ship HMS Victor Emanuel in Hong Kong, the receiving ship HMS Cormorant, probably in Gibraltar, and the Acacia Class minesweeping sloop HMS Anemone during the first World War, as well as being based variously in Malta, Portsmouth and Plymouth. A copy of its admiralty record is available.

A fine and earlier than usual English Hack Watch (Deck Watch) in very good original condition, showing few signs of its extensive service, and never having been adapted to be unwearable. The lovely original box showing some honourable scars. Cleaned and guaranteed.
