Rare Liverpool pocket compass in original case, circa 1835.
Gilded brass watch form case. Enamel dial with full compass rose, the blued-steel steel needle marked N and S. 41 mm diameter. With original velvet and silk lined morocco leather covered outer case with brass latch.
J Davis, 63 Bold Street, Liverpool. Gloria Clifton (Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851) records John Davis (Davies) as a thermometer maker, optician and ships chandler active between 1824 and 1845, but not at this address.
The dial in perfect original condition, but with some minor wear to the gilding and dust under the glass, as usual. Otherwise the glass crack and scratch free and everything still operating as it should. The box, originally red, now stained black, the latch acting properly. A perfect accompaniment, I think, for any good early Liverpool lever pocket watch of the period.
