Top quality Geneva movement with lever escapement by Sylvain Mairet, circa 1840.

More details

Gilt barred keywound movement jewelled to the 3rd, the frame numbered 38465. Beautifully finished detached lever escapement with all the lift given by the polished steel escape wheel, the lever with pointed ruby pallets and with inset gold notch for the safety action. Compensation balance, spiral balance-spring. Lovely enamel dial, with original blued-steel hands. 43 mm diameter, 6.5 mm deep, not including centre arbor.

The finish of this movement is similar to the quality of Vacheron & Constantin and other top quality watch manufacturers working in Geneva at this period, and I suspect that the number on the frame may be significant in identifying the maker.

NB: It may well be that the cuvette in case of this watch, now scrapped, carried the retailers name, but this class and type of escapement is closely associated with Sylvain Mairet, considered to be amongst the finest watchmakers of his day.

Hair cracks to dial, otherwise the movement in fine original condition, with a most rare and desirable escapement. Not cleaned by me, and perhaps not for a long time, but ticking when wound.
