Good all-English presentation wristwatch from Morris Motors Ltd.
2-piece 9 ct gold case with original winding button, the case hallmarked 1962, casemaker SCW (Smiths Clock & Watch Division). Smiths classic ‘12.15’ (12 ligne, 15 jewels) gilt movement. Double-roller lever escapement with polished steel escape, the monometallic balance with beryllium balance-spring. Two-tone silvered dial with a mix of raised gilt numerals and baton markers, gilt hands. 32 mm diameter, not including button or lugs. Together with original De Luxe silk and velvet lined, leather covered box.
A good example of Smiths model A.504 wristwatch, with rare Morris Motors provenance, as presented in their Golden Jubilee Year to A E Burdett for 25 Years Service.
For more information about Smiths English wristwatches see the short note in my website Glossary, and my illustrated article on Smiths ‘English Wristwatches’ in the April 2003 issue of Antique Collecting. NB: This case style is not waterproof and all Smiths wristwatches of this date are best kept well away from damp conditions. Please also be aware that most Smiths wristwatches that survive show all the signs of much use, often with water damage, particularly to the dial. I do not deal in such watches and offer only those examples that have survived in very good or better condition (as here) with, wherever possible, original rather than refinished dials.
General signs of wear to case and dial, but not at all bad, and the snap-on case back has had a repair to a crack, to which this model is prone, and which is now safe and almost invisible. Fitted with new/old stock black leather strap. Serviced for its previous owner and working well.
