Good early Model 57 lever movement, circa 1860. 18-size fullplate going-barrel movement jewelled to the 3rd (15 or 16 jewels) in well finished screw held settings. Single-roller detached lever escapement with brass club-tooth escape (divided lift), the pallet frame with English style 'covered' jeweling. Compensation balance, spiral balance-spring. Enamel dial signed American Watch Co, blued-steel hands. 46 mm diameter, 10.5 mm deep, not including centre arbor.
The American Watch Company, Waltham, USA, one of the pre-eminent manufactures of machine-made watches, about whom much has been written and whose reputation is second to none.
Hair crack to dial, otherwise complete and nothing broken but balance not swinging freely, probably due to sticky oil. Sold as needing at least a service and fresh oil to work properly.
