Stipple engraved portrait.
Nevil Maskelyne, Astronomer Royal, with a distant view of the Old Royal Observatory on the background. Drawn for the European Magazine, and published by J Asperne at the Bible, Gown & Constitution, Cornhill, London, 1st March 1804. Image size 10 x 8 cm, overall size 22 x 14.
With good plate mark and margins, in good clean condition with just some minor foxing, mostly showing on the top line of type. A lovely image of this most accomplished astronomer, wrongly maligned over his dealings with John Harrison, and subsequently treated unfairly by most horological writers, particularly by Dava Sobel in her now infamous 'cowboys and indians' account of Harrison's dealings with the Board of Longitude.
