Rare large lithographic portrait.
Engraved from an original drawing done at Windsor in 1814. Published by the Acadamie des Sciences, Institut Royal de France, 1822. 31 x 24.5 cm.
Sir Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel (1738-1822), musician, composer and astronomer, designer and builder of his own wonderful telescopes and specula, from which he and his sister discovered the planet Uranus, and much else. Next time you sit and enjoy afternoon tea with a view of the equation longcase by Tompion in Bath's wonderful Pump Room, please know that Herschel also was also arranger of music at this venue when undertaking his nightly observations; and I recommend a visit Herschel's house in Bath which is now a museum.
This print not mentioned in the National Portrait Gallery's list of Herschel portraits. Some browning to the edges, otherwise in good condition ready to frame.
