Rare large lithographic portrait.
Engraved by J H Lynch and published by Day & Son, lithographers to the Queen. No date, circa 1850. Image size 21.5 x 18 cm, overall size 36 x 28 cm.
George Biddell Airy, FRS (1801-1892), mathematician and astronomer, appointed Astronomer Royal in 1835, designer of precision clock escapements and chronometer improvements.
Some browning of paper, otherwise a good example of what I regard as one of the best portraits of this pre-eminent Victorian.
