Engraved portrait taken from, but not a direct copy of, the title page portrait in Brahe's Mechanica. Signed at the bottom: J M Bernigroth fc Lips, 1743. Image size 16 x 10 cm on good quality laid paper with generous borders, overall size 27 x 22 cm.
Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), the most famous astronomer of the 16th century, builder of his own observatory Uraniborg on the island of Hven, granted to him by Frederick II in 1576. Brahe was the first to make use of precision clocks, with cross-beat escapement, by Jost Burgi.
Rare. Some minor foxing to border, just one or two within the image. Otherwise clean and ready to frame.
