Rare model with unusual and decorative design of case, circa 1960.
Gold plated 2-piece case with 'scalloped' bezel and shaped lugs. Smiths smaller sized 15-jewel 8 3/4 ligne gilded movement with 'Permalife' unbreakable mainspring. Double-roller detached lever escapement with steel escape, the monometallic balance with beryllium balance-spring. Silvered dial with mix of raised gilt batons and the numeral 12, original matching gilt hands. 32 mm diameter, not including button or lugs.
This is the Astral model T.302 shown in Smiths 1960 catalogue, page 35. For more information about Smiths English wristwatches see the short note in my website Glossary, and my illustrated article on Smiths ‘English Wristwatches’ in the April 2003 issue of Antique Collecting.
NB: All Smiths wristwatches of this date are best kept well away from damp conditions. Please also be aware that most Smiths wristwatches that survive show all the signs of much use, often with water damage, particularly to the dial. I do not deal in such watches and offer only those examples that have survived in very good or better condition with, wherever possible, original rather than refinished dials.
Case showing some wear and scratches to the gilding, as usual, and some age spotting to the dial. Otherwise in good original condition, and a size suitable for the smaller wrist: man, woman or boy. On new/old stock brown leather strap. Serviced for its previous owner and looks to be working well, but can be freshly serviced if wanted.
