Lovely 18th century pair case verge in good original condition.
Silver cases, the outer with contemporary watchpaper, hallmarked London 1770, casemaker IL (probably John Laithwite, Clerkenwell). Fullplate fusee movement with square baluster pillars and nicely pierced and engraved balance cock. Verge (recoil) escapement. Steel balance with spiral balance-spring. Beautiful Roman and Arabic dial, blued-steel beetle & poker hands. 48 mm diameter.
Robert Boyle, a watchmaker probably working in Clements Inn Passage at this date, is not recorded by Baillie or Loomes but is noted in the last (9th) edition of Britten. This watch brings the date of him being active earlier than mentioned.
The case showing just a few of the expected signs of use, and the dial with a few small chips. Otherwise a lovely lenticular shaped pair cased watch (so good in the hand) in fine original condition. Ticking when wound but not cleaned by me and priced accordingly - it can be freshly serviced if wanted.
