Rare model, all-English centre-seconds wristwatch with date and hack setting.
Heavy, best quality 2-piece 9ct gold 'aquatite' case with screw-on back hallmarked London 1970, sponsor's mark SCW (Smith Clock & Watch Division). Smiths Cal:60465E 17 jewel shockproof movement with hack setting feature operated by the winding button. Club-tooth lever escapement with Beryllium balance-spring and polished steel escape. Stylish radially brushed silvered dial with upright Arabic hour numerals, and with the rare Smiths feature of a date window at 3, original gilt hands. A larger than normal size being 34 mm diameter.
I do not have a Smiths catalogue that shows this model and I cannot remember having seen another example. It dates from 1970, the year when Smiths suddenly shut down production of all their best quality wristwatches (De Luxe, Astral, Everest and Imperial), though the Astral name was retained and used with imported movements. For more information about Smiths English wristwatches see the short note in my website Glossary, and my illustrated article on Smiths ‘English Wristwatches’ in the April 2003 issue of Antique Collecting.
NB: Even though this model was sold as waterproof, all Smiths wristwatches are best kept well away from damp conditions. Please also be aware that most Smiths wristwatches that survive show all the signs of much use, often with water damage, particularly to the dial. I do not deal in such watches and offer only those examples that have survived in very good or better condition (as here) with, wherever possible, original rather than refinished dials.
A fine English wristwatch in lovely condition, showing just a few signs (not bad) of careless use of a case opener on the back. On new tan ostrich leather strap. Serviced and guaranteed.
