Thomas Russell & Son, one of the largest and most famous Liverpool watchmaking firms, as well as occasional retailers of other manufactures work: English, American and Swiss.

Nicole Nielsen, based at 14 Soho Square, with Adolphe Nicole joined by Danish born watchmaker Emil Nielsen by 1876, this firm were the foremost London watchmakers of the second half of the 19th century, supplying many of the finest chronographs, repeaters and tourbillion watches to retailers such as Frodsham, Dent, Smith & Son, etc. See my reprint of Nicole Nielsen's High-Class English Watches trade catalogue and my site Glossary for more information about this most important and still underrated London firm of watchmakers. NB: This class of repeater, NN's Type 30, is shown in the catalogue and is priced at £58, a small fortune at the time.

The dome (inner rear cover) with presentation engraving: G W Mumford, Liverpool 1906, under which has been added for his son W C Mumford, May 30th 1928. This refers to Capt Walter Clarkson Mumford MC of the Irish Guards (1886-1959) who retired to live at Sugwas Court, Herefordshire. Wounded in the leg during the first World War, Capt Mumford was known to Rudyard Kipling who mentions him in several of his books and letters.

This watch was obviously a treasured family possession and shows almost no signs of use, being in fine original condition, the bow and swivel pendant still tight, etc. Serviced and guaranteed.
