£ 395.00

Good pair case verge with unusual dial by this important manufacturer.

More details

Silver pair case hallmarked Birmingham 1835, case with sponsor's stamp VR (Vale & Rotherham) and possibly the maker CE. Typical Coventry fullplate fusee movement of the period signed for its retailer on the barrel-bar (name bar). Verge (recoil) escapement. Rare enamel dial with the figures in red, gilt hands. 55 mm diameter.

Vale & Co, becoming Vale & Rotherham, a most important partnership that itself predated the Coventry based firm of Rotherhams that became one of the best and most important suppliers of both hand-finished and machine-made watch movements in England well into the 20th century. Most of their work carries the name of a retailer at this early period.

NB: Watch dial are rarely coloured in English work, this being a rare exception, and this is one of very few times I remember seeing this red colour used. The outer case with two old American, Columbia PA, watchpapers.

Complete and looking to be in good general used condition but not working and offered at a sale price as it needs repair to work properly.
