Rare 18ct gold crystal (flat glass) hunter by this good Coventry firm.
Good solid case hallmarked London 1889, sponsor's stamp R&S (Rotherham & Son). Rotherham's 'super grade' three-quarter plate movement jewelled to the 3rd, with cap jewels on balance, lever and escape. Single-roller detached lever escapement. Compensation balance, balance-spring with overcoil. Lovely signed enamel dial bearing Rotherhams trademark in perfect condition, original matching blued-steel hands, the hour of distinctive Rotherham's spade shape. 50.5 mm diameter and only just over 14 mm deep, the watch weighing 116 grams gross.
Rotherham & Sons Ltd, 27 Spon Street, Coventry, with offices in London at this point, the UK’s premier machine-made watch manufacturer, both pocket and wristwatches – see my English Wristwatch section.
NB: This form of crystal hunter case is only occasionally found and is particularly well suited for wear, being relatively slim, as well as looking good.
Monogram to front cover, otherwise in fine original condition showing few signs of wear, and unusual being 18 rather than 9ct gold. Serviced and guaranteed.
