Rare and early larger sized English wristwatch, in fine original condition.
Silver 'swing ring' case with pin-setting hallmarked London 1916, casemaker R&S (Rotherham & Son). Rotherhams ‘super grade’ three quarter-plate movement jewelled to the 3rd, with cap jewels on balance, lever and escape. Single-roller detached lever escapement with ratchet tooth escape. Compensation balance, blued-steel balance-spring with overcoil. Enamel dial in perfect condition with radium filled skeleton numerals and matching hands. 35 mm diameter, not including lugs or button. Together with its original dark brown leather strap with silver buckle hallmarked London 1916, and pierced protective face guard, patented in 1916.
Rotherham & Son, by this time the largest and one of the best watch manufactures in the UK, suppliers of most of the good quality wristwatch movements found in English work. Rotherhams produced two basic qualities, both jewelled to the 3rd, the better ‘super grade’ having separate, screw held jewel settings.
For more information about English wristwatches see the short note in my website Glossary, and my illustrated article on ‘English Wristwatches’ in the April 2000 issue of Antique Collecting. NB: This case style is not waterproof and all English wristwatches of this date are best kept well away from damp conditions.
Rear of case with what I believe to be a slightly later presentation engraving dated 1921 and the strap re-stitched at some point. Otherwise a very rare all English made wristwatch dating from the 1st World War, now often called 'trench watches' and, unlike many so described, looking to have been used in the trenches. It has survived in much better condition than most from this period, even the radium being all present and, given the obvious attempt to save the original strap, was most likely kept as a tribute to its original owner rather than being worn.
As it is such a rare survival I have not had the watch serviced or the case cleaned and am offering it in its present state. It does wind and will tick but it can be freshly serviced if required - my charge would be approximately £150 plus parts.
