Larger sized all-English centre-seconds wristwatch with rare dial.
Best quality 2-piece 9ct gold Dennison AQUATITE screw back case, hallmarked Birmingham 1958. Smiths 27.CS 17 jewel shockproof movement. Double-roller detached lever escapement with polished steel escape, the monometallic balance with beryllium balance-spring. Silvered dial with raised gilt upright figures on a guilloche background, original gilt hands, the centre-seconds with Smiths usual red tip. 33.5 mm diameter. Together with its De Luxe leather box.
An unusual Smiths model which does not feature in any of their catalogues known to me, a pairing of the dial used on their A.361 model with Dennison's best quality gold case, as probably requested for these OTIS presentation watches. For more information about Smiths English wristwatches see the short note in my website Glossary, and my illustrated article on Smiths ‘English Wristwatches’ in the April 2003 issue of Antique Collecting.
NB: Although this case style was advertised as waterproof all Smiths wristwatches of this date are best kept well away from damp conditions. Please also be aware that most Smiths wristwatches that survive show all the signs of much use, often with water damage, particularly to the dial. I do not deal in such watches and offer only those examples that have survived in very good or better condition, as here, with original rather than refinished dials.
Case back with OTIS Elevator Company presentation engraving: to W L Hucker, dated 1959. Otherwise in very good original condition showing only minor signs of wear, the dial and hands being almost mint. On new/old stock brown leather strap. Serviced for its previous owner and working well.
