Good Swiss half-hunter cased chronograph, circa 1890, in original Benson box.
Double-back 18ct gold Swiss made case with blue enamel chapter on the cover, the rear with nicely engraved 'CH" monogram. Swiss (probably Longines) supplied three-quarter plate movement jewelled to the 3rd, the top plate fully engraved for J W Benson ‘WATCHMAKER BY WARRANTS TO THE QUEEN & THE PRINCE OF WALES.' Double-roller detached lever escapement. Compensation balance, balance-spring with overcoil. Enamel dial with 60-minute counter at 3 in perfect condition, original blued-steel hands, the hour of correct half-hunter style. 51 mm diameter. Together with Benson silk and velvet lined red leather box.
James Walter Benson ‘by Warrant to H M the King,’ London’s largest and most energetic watchmaking and watch retailing firm of the second half of the 19th and the first half of 20th centuries. They sold both English and Swiss made watches, Longines being their usual supplier of English-style chronograph movements.
